About This Item
Philadelphia: The John C. Winston Company Book. Good. Hardcover. (1916), 261pp, index, illustrated. A very narrow, (1/8 in.) strip of silverfishing at the fore edges, affecting only the margins, not the text, of the last twenty five pages or so, extremities worn, some darkening of the spine and covers, else G. Scott Nearing, (1883-1983), was born in Morris Run, Pennsylvania. He was Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Toledo (Ohio) University at the time he wrote this book, but was dismissed shortly thereafter for his radical views. Later, he was dismissed from another institution, and he and his wife began a back to the farm lifestyle, shunning many of the conveniences of modern day society. He believed that large corporations and wealthy people were to blame for most of society's ills, and apparently felt that the poor could be strengthened by weakening the rich. He was a Socialist, vegetarian and pacifist, and became something of a counter culture hero when he was well into his eighties..
