About This Item
New York: Ballantine Books, 1977. First Ballantine Books Edition [stated]. Presumed first printing. Trade paperback. Very good/Very good. Norman Rockwell. xiii, (1), 300, (4) pages. Large volume, measuring 8.1/4 inches by 11 inches. This includes translations of Foreign Aphorisms and Notes. This new illustrated Poor Richard's Almanack was published by the Limited Editions Club in 1964 in an edition limited to 1,500 copies. This new volume contains everything in that limited edition, including all of the illustrations by Norman Rockwell. Rockwell's illustrations consist of six full-color oil paintings and some forty line drawings. Contains an introduction by Van Wyck Brooks. Poor Richard's Almanack (sometimes Almanac) was a yearly almanac published by Benjamin Franklin, who adopted the pseudonym of "Poor Richard" or "Richard Saunders" for this purpose. The publication appeared continually from 1732 to 1758. It sold exceptionally well for a pamphlet published in the American colonies; print runs reached 10,000 per year. Franklin, the American inventor, statesman, and publisher, achieved success with Poor Richard's Almanack. Almanacks were very popular books in colonial America, offering a mixture of seasonal weather forecasts, practical household hints, puzzles, and other amusements. Poor Richard's Almanack was also popular for its extensive use of wordplay, and some of the witty phrases coined in the work survive in the contemporary American vernacular.
