New York: Harper, 1895. First Edition of the Author’s First Book. Signed presentation copy from Frederic Remington to the wife of Scottish rugby union player and Wall Street banker John Kennedy Todd (1852- 1925). Signed and inscribed by the author on the front pastedown: “To Mrs. J. Kennedy Todd from Frederic Remington, Now you may understand why I so much admire the ‘wild’ gate-house.” With the bookplate of noted collector H. Bradley Martin. Illustrated by Frederic Remington with a frontispiece and 69 additional full page black & white plates. Bound in light brown cloth, octavo, 269 pages. Minor foxing to the endpapers and the rear hinge barely starting. Very good plus slightly handled copy with some darkening to the cloth and minor edge wear, with bright gilt-stamping to the front board and very slightly rubbed gilt-stamping to the spine. Frederic Remington (1861 - 1909) was an American painter, illustrator, sculptor, and writer who specialized in images of the American Old West. A member of the second generation of Hudson River School artists, Remington's works are known for portraying the Western United States in the last quarter of the 19th-century, featuring such images as cowboys, Native Americans, and the U.S. Cavalry. Enclosed in a handsome light brown cloth clamshell box.
