About This Item

New York: Newsweek Books, 1975. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good. 4to - over 9. Type: Hardback First Edition. Deluxe Binding of brown pebble-cloth with gilt titles to spine. Newsweek Books World of Culture Series. Hardcover Book in Fine Condition with a Very Good Dust Jacket in Archival Protective Cover. Lavishly illustrated--180 illustrations, more than a third in full color supplement and enhance the text. This includes holograph samples and frontispieces of early editions of the world's best known poems; portraits of illustrious poets and photographs of their mementos, and copious examples of artwork commissioned to illustrate the poems. This volume deals with the growth and development of Western poetic tradition and quotes sparingly from works of our foremost poets, beginning with Homer and Vergil. Later chapters focus on religious poetry from Dante's Divine Comedy to Milton's Paradise Lost. The lyricists and satirists of the Restoration; the giants of the Romantic revolution, Keats, Shelley, Byron, Wordsworth; the figures of poetry's modern Renaissance, Yeats, Pound, Frost, Stevens, Eliot, are all included in this comprehensive volume. "New Directions" examines the poetry of non-English speaking poets and their contribution to 20th century verse. A five page chronology relates events in the history of poetry to other cultural and political developments. Very clean and unmarked red cloth with gilt line drawing on front and gilt titles on spine, light wear to lower corners, tight and solid and square. On corner of paste-down, there is a small blacked out something, otherwise, internals are as new. 192 pages, indexed. 7.5 x 10 inches. 1975, Newsweek Books, New York.
