He authored the successful work "Picturesque America". This work is illustrated by one hundred engravings by Birket Foster, Harry Fenn, Alfred Fredericks and others.

8vo, 501pp, portrait frontis & illustrated throughout, all edges marbled. 3/4 brown leather and marbled boards, gilt decoration in six compartments on spine, red spine label. Spine tips & corners slt. rubbed. A faintest of tideline on the front lower corner. Internally clean and bright, binding tight.
