A lovely copy of the collected poetical works of Matthew Arnold, in a Lancing College school prize binding signed Bickers & Son. A later printing of this work collecting the poetical works of Matthew Arnold. Victorian poet and cultural critic, Arnold was mainly known for his work educating readers on contemporary social issues. Including early and later poems, sonnets, narrative, lyric, dramatic, and elegiac poems. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece portrait of the author.In a smart half morocco binding signed Bickers & Son, Lancing College prize binding awarded to F. M. G. Bannes for form prize upper fourth on S. Nicolas' Day in 1916. In a half morocco binding over cloth covered boards, gilt titles to the spine and gilt lining to the boards, 'Beati Mundo Corde' gilt embossing to the front board. Externally very smart with minor shelf wear and a minor scuffing to the rear board. School prize bookplate to the front pastedown, dated 1916. Internally, firmly bound. Light spotting to the fore edge, not affecting the leaves that are otherwise bright and clean. Illustrated with a frontispiece. Very Good Indeed
