About This Item

Edinburgh: Archibald Constable and Co., 1822. First edition. Leather. Good Only. 6.5" by 4.5". Not Stated. A first edition four-volume set of poetry by Scottish poet and novelist James Hogg. The uncommon first edition of this set in half calf bindings. Bookplate to the front paste downs. James Hogg (1770-1835) was a Scottish poet, novelist and essayist. As a young man he worked as a shepherd and farmhand, and he consequently became known as the 'Ettrick Shepherd', a nickname under which some of his works were published. This is a four-volume collection of his poetry. Volume I contains 'The Queen's Wake'; volume II contains 'Midsummer Night Dreams'; volume III contains 'The Poetic Mirror', miscellanies and songs; and volume IV contains 'Mador of the Moor', sacred melodies, miscellaneous poems, and songs. In half calf bindings. Externally sound, with rubbing to spine and corners, shelf wear to boards and losses to spine labels. Backstrip is lifting and front joint is splitting to vols I and IV. Front hinge strained to vols I and II. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean except for faint damp stains to the fore edge and page perimeters. Good Only
