About This Item

New York: John F. Trow, printer, 1857. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Large square octavo, 155pp., illustrated with tipped-in photographic portrait of the author on the verso of the title page, SIGNED below by Lawson. A fine, fresh copy in the original full blue rough-grain cloth with beveled boards and gilt designs, all edges gilt. One of a few dedication copies, this one SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Lawson on a front blank to his daughter, Kate F. Lawson. Interestingly, laid-in is another gathering of the title page and preceding blank, seemingly excised from another copy, containing Lawson's inscription to his son of the same name, also with the tipped-in photograph and signature below. A rare volume of vanity press from a prominent New York businessman, who seems to have lived to be 101 (1779-1880). He would have thus been 78 at the time of publication, likely thinking he was at the end of his life, not realizing he would live another two decades. The poems vary widely in their subjects and content. Rare in commerce, with the last auction appearance in 1927. OCLC records about two dozen holdings, though some of these may be digital-only. Sabin 39449.

About Cleveland Book Company

We are proud members of the ABAA.

As a small, independent bookseller in Cleveland, Ohio, I deal in general used, rare, and antiquarian books, autographs, manuscripts, pamphlets, and personal and family papers in all subjects. My family has been in the antiquarian book business since 1971. Are you moving, downsizing, or doing some spring cleaning? Did you inherit or otherwise come into some old books? Or, maybe you've collected modern novels from the last thirty or fifty years. No matter what kinds of books you have, we'd love to take a look at them! We travel throughout Ohio, western Pennsylvania and New York, southern Michigan, and eastern Indiana, and will travel farther in some cases to look at whole libraries or even just a few particularly interesting books. Give us a call at (216) 352-3940 and we can talk more about the kinds of books you have.
