Dan Cushman, who wrote dozens of books, was best known for his 1953 novel ''Stay Away, Joe,'' which was made into a movie starring Elvis Presley. The book's portrayal of American Indians, especially that of the protagonist, a lusty rogue, aroused controversy in Montana. Mr. Cushman moved to Montana as a boy and grew up in the small communities of Box Elder, near the Rocky Boy's Indian Reservation, and Big Sandy, which is described in his autobiography, ''Plenty of Room and Air.'' Mr. Cushman wrote books set in the South Pacific, the Congo and the Yukon, and he drew on his colorful life for much of his fiction. He worked as a cowboy, a printer, a prospector, a geologist's assistant, an advertising writer and a radio announcer. In 1998 Mr. Cushman received the H. G. Merriam Award for Distinguished Contributions to Montana Literature. This is a fast-moving, funny, incident-rich account of the homestead days in Montana.
