About This Item

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 1905. Softcover. Fine/Fine. Oblong octavo measuring 7.5" x 6.75". Black leather flexible boards. Contains 100 gelatin silver black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 3.5" x 3" and 4.5" x 4" with captions. Fine with fine photographs. A family photo album from 1903 through to 1905 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The young woman captions the photos with the first names of her dear friends and family members as well as her pet dog, Jerry and pet cat, Spot. The family also owned two horses Nellie and Dottie, who can be seen also drawing a carriage along in some of the photographs. The woman's mother and father are pictured together, captioned "Up Hill and Ready for a Ride". The album shows the transition of fashion from long and tight dresses with embellishments to looser decorative shirts and skirts that did not slim the figure as drastically. Some of the girl's school uniforms can be seen with a shorter hemline and humorously, a young boy is seen wearing one of the skirts over his school trousers. While many of the photographs are posed there are some candids, including a charming shot of the women laughing together while enjoying the outdoors, getting ready to play tennis together, or boating on a lake. An interesting photograph shows two women together with a broom, both their mattress on their roof awnings for cleaning. There is a photograph titles "Maid, Mayor, Cook" in which the current Mayor, William B. Hays, of Pittsburgh can be seen in between to women. He is a pictured again with the woman's father in his office with a small dog sitting at their drafting table with the two men.
