About This Item

London: Hutchinson and Co, 1925. Cloth. Very Good Indeed. 7.5" by 5". Not Stated. A very scarce, first photoplay edition of Gaston Leroux's famous novel, 'Phantom of the Opera' Translated into English by Alexander Teixeira de Mattos. Illustrated, with a frontispiece and seven plates. The plates have been taken from the classic 1925 silent horror film starring Lon Chaney. There was an American edition issued later the same year with only four plates.'The Phantom of the Opera' was first published as a serial in Le Gaulois from September 1909 to January 1910. It was partly inspired by historical events during the 19th century at the Paris Opera.  The most notable adaptations are the 1925 film which forms the illustrations to this volume, and Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1986 musical. A fantastic copy of this very scarce and iconic work. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, in an excellent condition with minor shelfwear to the joints and extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with just the occasional light spots to pages. Very Good Indeed

Synopsis

The Phantom of the Opera is a novel by French writer Gaston Leroux. It was first published as a serialization in Le Gaulois from September 23, 1909 to January 8, 1910. Initially, the story sold very poorly upon publication in book form and was even out of print several times during the twentieth century, despite the success of its various film and stage adaptations. The most notable of these were the 1925 film depiction and Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1986 musical.
