Finely bound in later (early twentieth century) aniline calf over marble boards. Raised bands with the title blocked direct in gilt. Spine compartments uniformly tooled in gilt. Spine uniformly sun-toned with minor wear to the spine bands and panel edges. Remains an uncommonly good example; tight, bright, clean and strong. ; 8vo 8"" - 9"" tall; 624 pages; Early issue. Physical description; xvi, 624p., 40 plates ; 21.1cm. Edition: first issued in parts 1849-1850. Errata p. XV. Illustrations: etched title page and 39 etchings by H. K. Browne (Phiz).
