About This Item
London: Wetheimer, Lea, & Co, 1889. First edition. Cloth. Good. 8.5" by 5.5". None. The first edition of William Tallack's interesting work on prisons and crime in the nineteenth century. With the bookplate of the politician John Leng. The first edition of this work. This work is an interesting look at penology, and the preventive principles that were put in place in Europe and America in the nineteenth century. In this work, Tallack argued for prisons that would prevent crimes, and give offenders better treatment, finding the state lacking in support for the concept of moral agency. Written by William Tallack, who was an English prison reformer. He was the secretary for the Howard Association, which is the oldest penal reform organisation in the world. He held this position from 1866 to 1901. He visited Europe, Egypt, Australia, Tasmania, Canada, and the US as an activist, and advocated in particular for more prison visitors, and lecturers. Tallack also worked for the Peace Society, a pacifist organisation. With a bookplate to the front pastedown, belonging to Sir John Leng. Leng was a newspaper proprietor, and Liberal Party politician in Scotland. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Slight discolouration to the spine. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Light marks to the boards. Bookplate to the front pastedown. Evidence of label being formerly adhered to the verso of the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with only a couple of very light spots. A couple of pages uncut to the fore edge. Institutional stamp to the title page. Good
