About This Item
London: Bradbury & Evans,, 1864-65. First edition of the autobiography of a leading Victorian publisher and author. Charles Knight (1791-1873) recounts his dealings with Dickens, De Quincey, Martineau and Thackeray, among others. Knight's Passages "provides a unique insight into the world of nineteenth-century popular publishing; unlike many other publishers, Knight analysed supply and demand in detail, giving print runs and sales figures for some of his publications" (ODNB). Knight tailored his publishing career to the self-improvement of the working classes, and his most substantial publications were popular reference works. Three volumes, octavo. Original brownish orange straight-ribbed cloth, spines lettered and ruled in gilt, concentric panels to covers in blind, brown coated endpapers. Publisher's announcement for vols. II & III tipped in to front endpapers of vol. I. Engraved booklabel of Arnold Yates (1900-1971), bookseller, to front pastedown. Light bumping, rubbing, and finger-soiling, minor foxing to endpapers, edges, and outer leaves: a very good set.
