About This Item

Paris: Aux Editions Raymond Schall, 1944. Boards. Near Fine. A fascinating and important Association copy: WARMLY INSCRIBED BY FRENCH CHILDREN'S ILLUSTRATOR AND FASHION DESIGNER MANON IESSEL (1909-1985) TO RENOWNED AMERICAN HEIRESS AND PHILANTHROPIST HUGUETTE CLARK (1906-2011), AS WELL KNOWN FOR HER RECLUSIVENESS AND ECCENTRICITY (LIVING OUT THE LAST 20 YEARS OF HER LIFE IN HER PRIVATE HOSPITAL ROOM IN NEW YORK) AS FOR HER VARIOUS UNOCCUPIED ESTATES (SANTA BARBARA, CA; NEW CANAAN, CT, ETC.). HUGUETTE CLARK WAS BORN IN PARIS AND LIVED THERE THE FIRST 5 YEARS OF HER LIFE BEFORE MOVING TO NEW YORK. SHE WAS THE PATRON TO A NUMBER OF ARTISTS (INCLUDING MANON IESSEL) AND IN PRESENTING THIS BOOK TO CLARK IESSEL TENDERLY POINTS OUT THE STARK CONTRAST BETWEEN THE PARIS OF CLARK'S CHILDHOOD AND THE "OCCUPIED" PARIS OF THE WAR YEARS. A very sharp copy to boot of the 1944 1st trade edition. Tight and Near Fine in its pictorial boards. Quarto, striking gravure photos thruout by the likes of Robert Doisneau, Pierre Jahan, Maurice Jarnoux, Roger Schall et al documenting the grim 4 year occupation of Paris. Lacking the publisher's uncommon wraparound band.
