About This Item
Tokyo, Japan: Toto Bunka, Co. Ltd. (Distributed by Tuttle), 1954. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine in Good Plus Dustjackets. Six large folios (14 1/2 in. x 10 1/2 in.), in dustjacket, all housed in original corrugated boxes with lids
with printed, pasted-on labels. Sage-green, cloth-covered boards with dark brown, white, and orange
lettering and designs to front, and dark brown title-lettering to spine. Each volume features approximately 50 plates, coloured and black and white, and with many of the brilliantly coloured images tipped in. Included are illustrated scholarly essays, for each medium group, Explanations of the Plates, and List of Plates (only Volume II list is missing.
NOTE: This set spent the past year and a half in someone's garage, and there is some evidence of past moisture, and maybe faint mustiness only if you try hard to find it, but no mold/mildew evident. Some spines, fading, and striations from the corrugated boxes have transferred onto the dustjackets. The thick, sturdy cardboard boxes with lids, as well as the dustjackets (with spines sun-faded), have done a remarkably good job of protecting this beautiful set of books. One corner of one volume shows a light stain and corner nudge, but overall set is near-fine and very bright. Previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown of each of the six volumes.
A simply lovely and comprehensive undertaking, still beautiful and eminently useable, some 70 years after publication, like us, the beholders, now with a few brown puffs and wrinkles around the edges.
Herein is a 30-lb. thorough education in the magnificent legacy of Japanese creativity.
Colour and collotype printing done by The Tsuka Kogei Col, Ltd, The Han-shichi Printing, Co., Ltd., The Mitsumura Colour Printing Co., Ltd., Tokyo, and the Benrido Co., Ltd., Kyoto. The Gravure plates and the wood-block print were commissioned to The Tokyo Gravure Printing Co., Ltd., and the Adachi Institute of Wood-Block Prints (Tokyo).
NOTE: This very heavy set weighs nearly 29 lbs (almost 13 Kilos) BEFORE packaging. It can be well-protected, securely packaged and shipped. Volume I: Painting (1); Volume II (Painting (II); Volume III (Sculpture); Volume IV Ceramics and Metalwork; Volume V Textiles and Lacquer; Volume VI Architecture and Gardens.
