New York: Harper & Row, (1988). First U.S. edition. Short novel about a young working-class man and wealthy middle-aged widow. ASSOCIATION COPY INSCRIBED BY SILLITOE on title page, "For Walter, who is one/ of the happy few,/ a tale from the depths,/ Alan Sillitoe/ Nashville,/ Queen of Cities, 17/4/90." Walter Sullivan (1924-2006) was an author, critic, longtime Vanderbilt University professor, authority on Southern literature and one of the founding members of The Fellowship of Southern Writers. Most likely inscribed by Sillitoe (1928-2010) while his wife, the distinguished British poet Ruth Fainlight, was Poet in Residence at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. Fine in fine dust jacket.
