About This Item
Firenze: David Passigli, 1843. Three volumes. (iv) (546); (iv) (556); (iv), 564pp. Frontispiece portrait and one engraved plate in volume one; volumes two and three each have a single engraved plate. Curiously uncommon miniature edition of Ariosto's epic, known only in three institutional holdings (two in the US). Welsh notes two editions: one bearing the date of the present work, and another dated 1845; however, her measurements for both do not match the present example, which, at 2 7/16 inches tall is a quarter inch smaller than the 1845 edition she cites, and over a half inch smaller than the 1843 edition she examined. This copy retains what appears to be a maroon roan with the title stamped in gilt on the spines, which also have blind-ruled spine divisions. Bindings are rubbed, with some chipping to spines and an abrasion to the back cover of volume one. Very good overall. (See Welsh 289 and 290).
