Leather on boards with gilt titling and decoration, no dust jacket as issued, 405 pp., 5 full-page illustrations in silver-gilt including frontispiece, 173 bw figures in text, and over 4,000 facsimilies of makers marks and hall-marks. A classic book. Summarized from the preface: Includes a short history of the silversmiths' art in England, illustrated by portraits of distinguished ones, and "pieces of silver that one finds on a well-appointed table...The list of makers' marks is the most elaborate ever compiled...The difficult question of frauds is considered.
