New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1879. First Edition. First state, lacking the publisher's ads at rear. Octavo; dark peacock blue cloth, with titling and decorations stamped in gilt and black on spine and front cover; [viii],299,[3]pp. Light wear to extremities, some softening and a few tiny tears to spine ends, a few faint scuffs to lower front cover, and two faint creases smoothed out on front endpaper; hinges sound, with contents clean; Very Good+. An attractive copy of the author's first book, a collection of seven stories centering on Creole culture in New Orleans, which were first published in the pages of Scribner's Monthly. BAL 2330; WRIGHT III, 871.
