Boston: D. Lothrop and Company, 1884. Hardcover. Good+. H. [Henry] Pruett Share. Publisher's olive drab cloth decoratively stamped in dark green, silver and gold on spine and front cover. Worn at spine ends; front cover shows spotting. Rear inner hinge is cracked, but the binding holds firm. Short gift inscription dated 1893 on ffep; previous owner's name on reverse of frontispiece illustration. Some soiling to pages. Twenty-seven illustrated plates (including frontispiece with tissue guard) and ten in-text illustrations. pp. 306, plus [12] ads. A scarce copy of Catherwood's novel for young readers, which tells of the many adventures of a family traveling by covered wagon from Ohio to western Illinois in the 1840s. Mary Hartwell Catherwood (1847-1902) was the author of about twenty book between 1875 and 1901. The thirty-seven illustrations were done by Henry Pruett Share (1853-1905).
