First edtion, likely first printig as no other printing dates are provided on the copyright page. Printed by the Manhattan Press. Original red cloth gilt, some rubbing and wear on covers. Page 52/53 has been folded over at top edge. Otherwise pages are in excellent condition. The bidnding is tight despite the light split that shows on the inside seam next to the full title page (see photo). One of the most famous books about the the gilded age. The first volume in "The Epic of the Wheat" trilogy. The second volume "The Pit" was to be followed by "The Wolf" but Norris died before he could write it. This work deals with the California wheat ranchers and farmers and their struggles, including those with the railroads.
