Gertrude Thomson; plain endpapers; frontispiece by Tenniel with tissue guard firmly in place; text and illustrations printed on semi-gloss off-white paper Contains twenty coloured (chromolithographs) enlargements from Tenniel's illustrations to "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" with text adapted to nursery readers by Carroll. This copy while being complete with sound endpapers, has soiled covers, cover corners are worn through as is a three inch line along the bottom of the rear cover, and a fairly large area on the rear cover has moisture stains, with grey spots (perhaps mold but there is no odor) affecting in a lessening way the adjacent nine leaves. While printed in 1890, this edition was not issued until 1897 as the "cheaper price" edition with the original price on the title page of "price four shillings" overprinted with an ornamental rectangle and replaced with "price one shilling" printed above. A gift inscription on the front free endpaper is dated "Xmas 98".. Second Issue of First UK Edition. Hard Cover. Fair/No Dust Jacket as Issued. Illus. by Tenniel.

Synopsis

The Nursery "Alice" is a shortened version of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, adapted by the author himself for children "from nought to five" with twenty of Tenniel's illustrations from the original book coloured and enlarged. It was first published in 1890 by Macmillan, 25 years after the original Alice, and featured a new cover illustrated by E. Gertrude Thomson, who was a good friend of Dodgson.
