At first glance, one would assume this is just a book on Numerology. However, the text of this volume goes into a plethora of other esoteric subjects, including divination, astrology, ancient mythology, alchemy, and so much more. Of all the 1957 editions I have seen or owned this is by far one of the most well-preserved I have ever seen. Clean, crisp, and incredibly well-kept.
The philosophers of ancient Greece believed that numbers possessed some mysterious power independent of their arithmetical significance.
Thomas Taylor, in his translation of Lamblicus' Life of Pythagoras, said: "The Pythagoreans received from the theology of Orpheus the principles of intelligible and intellectual numbers; they assigned them an abundant progression and extended their dominion." Hence, that proverb was peculiar to the Pythagoreans that all things are assimilated to numbers. Pythagoras, therefore, in the Sacred Discourse, clearly stated: "Number is the ruler of forms and ideas, and is the cause of gods and demons." Numbers are used to express quantitative values in relation to Unity, which of itself is the first expression of Zero. From Zero, all numbers proceed, and into Zero, they all are resolved again. Thus, it comes about that the digits from first to last are represented by the number 10, the Alpha and Omega of all enumeration. If we set out the digits in their order, we find that they present to us a very curious set of relations, thus: 123456789. Bringing the first and last of these series together in order successively, we have 1 and 9 equal 10, 2 and 8 equal 10, 3 and 7 equal 10, and 4 and 6 equal 10.
It is the beginning by which all the other nine numbers are created. The basis of all numbers is ONE, and the basis of all life is ONE.
This number represents all that is creative, individual, and positive. It stands for force, boldness, and activity, as well as for powers of organizing and executive ability.
PREFACE
"Numerology is a science that has survived the test of thousands of years. The learned ancestors discovered the co-relationship of numbers, the planetary influences over life on this earth, and the ordered planning of the universe. No one has studied numerology more than Sepharial in modern times. His earlier works on the subject were closely allied to Astrology, but the present volume is written so that those without any astrological knowledge may have a clear exposition of numerology in every aspect of daily life. Sepharial was the leading exponent of the Science of Numerology. This book is a clear and complete guide to the science of numbers."
THE NUMBERS BOOK is an attempt to cover the background history of Numerology. Everyone believes in the power of numbers.-even the financial genius who makes so much money in the markets and in commerce is, deep down, a great worshipper of numbers. He does, in fact, number his way to success. But not everyone has the gift, or even the desire to operate, in this way; yet there is a deep feeling of superstition in us all that there is some force within that compels us to pause and take note of the power of numbers. For instance, seven can be lucky for one person and unlucky for another. Thirteen is universally believed to be unlucky, but there are many illustrations in life of its power as a lucky number. Lucky calculations can be made, which can lead to the right decision when making investments, backing horses or completing Pools coupons, playing Roulette, arranging a marriage or travel date, and so on throughout life. The study of numbers is an interesting, fascinating subject, and there can be no doubt that a knowledge of the contents of this book and of the subject of numbers will prove more than useful in the affairs of every man and every woman.
Walter Gorn Old (born 20 March 1864 in Handsworth, England; died 23 December 1929 in Hove, England) was a 19th-century astrologer who used the nom-de-plume "Sepharial", after an angel in the apocryphal Book of Enoch.
An eminent English Theosophist, Sepharial was a well-known and respected astrologer in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and wrote numerous books, some of which are still highly regarded in some circles today. He was editor of Old Moore's Almanac, which is still published in the 21st century.
