About This Item
1867. BURROUGHS, John. Notes on Walt Whitman, as a Poet and Person. In orig. cloth. N.Y.: American News Company, 1867. First edition. BAL 2134. Wells and Goldsmith p. 81-83. Light soiling to the binding. Corners and spine ends softened. Ownership name erased from the front free endpaper. Residue from an early label removed from the title page, else contents are clean. A nice copy of Burrough's first book, and first written on Whitman, here in purple cloth in BAL's binding variant A in a morocco-backed two-piece slipcase. Norman Foerster argues in his DAB entry that it is difficult to overstate the importance of Whitman's friendship to Burroughs and moreover Whitman's contribution to this book. Burroughs wrote, "I have no doubt that half the book is his" (III, p.331). This copy from the library renowned collector, H. Bradley Martin with his bookplate on the front pastedown. A very good copy with remarkably provenance. .
