About This Item

New York: Macmillan Company, 1924. First edition. Cloth. A very good copy, spine a bit darkened, some soiling on boards, small chip to bottom margin of two leaves, map loose and chipped on inner edge not affecting image, text clean. No dust jacket.. xi, 274 pp. Illus. with b/w photos and a map. Sm. 8vo. Nelson, Edward William, intro. Inscribed by the author to Lucy (who is Lucy Dietz Stander). Vilhjalmur Stefansson (1879-1962), anthropologist and explorer, went on three expeditions into the Alaskan and Canadian Arctic between 1906 and 1918, each lasting between one to five years. this was followed by years of lecturing and later involvement in social and radical causes including organizing groups to mobilize support for the USSR, and supporting the American Council on Soviet Relations. It is most likely at this time that he met Lucy Dietz Stander, recently divorced from Lionel Stander, both of whom were later named as communists and blacklisted.
