About This Item

US: Visible Ink Pr, 1993. Very Good. A copy that has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Cantor has compiled three other guides to travel, including Historic Landma rks of Black America (Gale, 1991). This one focuses on "the pervasive India n presence that is part of the daily backdrop of life in America." He has d one a thorough job of researching the 600 different Indian nations in the U .S. and Canada. Divided into seven regional sections, the sites are arrange d by state or province and then by town. At the beginning of each section i s a double-page map with each site marked. Sites include reservations, muse ums, recreated villages, battlefields, state parks, memorials, cultural cen ters, and festivals. Entries vary in length from one-half to two pages. Eac h includes location, hours, admission information, and telephone numbers. Suzan Shown Harjo, director of the Morning Star Foundation, an organization promoting Native American cultural rights, provides an excellent introduct ion that answers common questions about terminology (e.g., Indian, Native A merican), political status, and customs. A 10-page time line gives an overv iew of the Native American presence; a useful index of tribes and their sit es concludes the book. A short glossary and bibliography provide additional information. Illustrations include drawings and black-and-white photograph s. The third edition of Eagle-Walking Turtles's Indian America: A Traveler's Companion (John Muir, 1993) has a similar format. However, it has no information on Canadian tribes, and only address and telephone number are given fo.
