London: John Snow. Good+ with no dust jacket. 1861. Hardcover. Lacking one plate. Gutters split at endpapers. Hinges weak. Tissue guard at frontispiece detached. Provenance: Inscription on front endpaper from Dr and Mrs Turner to the Rev. W. Hutton. The inscription is dated 28 April 1891. Later ex libris label of D.K.S. Kidd. ; Stated "Second Thousand" on title page. xii, 548 pages + large folding chart "A Comparative View of the Polynesian Dialects + colour frontispiece + 9 of 10 black-and-white plates + 1 full page map. Lacking one black-and-white plate leaf, facing page 132. Besides the plate leaves, there is also a title page vignette and another 27 in-text illustrations. (In total, 39 of 40 illustrations are present, lacking one.) Brown cloth boards with blind-stamped pattern on both boards and spine. Gilt lettering on spine. Page dimensions: 212 x 136mm (8 1/4" x 5 3/8"). Colour frontispiece titled "A Samoan Orator". The frontispiece is "Engd & Printd in Colours by W. Dickes". The frontipiece appears to have been produced by a combination of engraving and some form of colour printing.
