About This Item

Gillete, NJ: Heptangle Books, 1988. First edition. Octavo. Bound in black cloth. (1) + 96pp. Black cloth. Black titles and red device to white spine label. In original letterpress dust jacket. Highly decorated title page in red and black. Entire volume printed in letterpress. Numerous seals and sigils in red and black. Stylized drop caps in red, blue and black. Additional marginal devices and emblems in red. One of the most desirable volumes from Heptangle Books. Very light rubbing to DJ spine otherwise a near fine copy in like jacket. It seems unlikely that this grimoire was authored by Roger Bacon since Bacon lived in the 13th century and the manuscripts cited are from the 16th century. Most likely this material was gathered together from copies of other magical writings which were passed from one person to another. The text includes numerous ceremonial practices concerning the evocation of spirits, somewhat similar to the rites in the Sworn Book of Honorius and the Book of St. Cyprian. The seals and sigils included remain unique in comparison with other magic works. MacDonald mentions that some of the content here was used as reference material for the Catholic rite of exorcism.
