About This Item

Orbis Publishing, London, 1983. Hardcover. Good Condition/Good. Sea power has had a profound effect on the history of the world through its influence in the rise and fall of nations. It is won and maintained by ships, by seamen, by the acceptance and use of the developing technology of the time and by prowess in battle, an amalgam of human courage and leadership. The despatch of the British task force to the Falklands as recently as 1982 served to highlight the continuing importance of conventional naval power even in this nuclear age. This is a book about naval warfare which deals with the significant campaigns of naval history, the decisive battles in those campaigns and includes biographical sketches of the principal naval leaders who directed and fought those battles. These are linked together with penetrating introductions to each new era of naval evolution, explaining the changes wrought in strategy and tactics by the development of new naval technology. 304 pages. Foxing to endpapers and page edges. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 2-3 kilos. Category: Military; Military & Warfare; Nautical::Naval. ISBN: 0856132853. ISBN/EAN: 9780856132858. The book ‘Naval Warfare’ published in 2004 by Silverdale books is adapted from a larger Time-Warner book called ‘Naval Warfare – an Illustrated History. In 219 pages of tightly packed words and hundreds of photographs and drawings it takes us from the battle of Salamis (Athenians versus Persians) to the Falklands conflict. The book is edited by Richard Humble a man with many historical naval books to his name. I was unable to find the foreword by Peter Kemp a former head of the Royal Naval Historical Branch (As mentioned on the title page) but there is a very comprehensive index.Definitely a book for the naval historian or the war gamers.
