Of utmost rarity. A second edition was published already the same year by F. Poisson, Caen. The work is attributed to Emmanuel, Marquis de Grouchy, Marshal of France (1766-1847). As commander-in-chief of the armies of France, he successfully led his soldiers after Waterloo back to the capital. He later resigned and retired to the USA but in 1819 he returned to France and was reinstated as marshal in 1831. General Baron Pierre Berthezène (1775-1847). Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Batty (1789-1848) army officer and artist Batty compiled books illustrated with plates etched by himself. He served in the Peninsular War, in the Duke of Wellington's 1815 Campaign, at Waterloo, where he was injured in the thigh. "Following Wellington's victory, Batty entered Paris with the 3rd battalion on 7 July, having en route been at the storming of the fortress of Péronne on 26 June. Published from the United States War Department, this an enormous handbook with instruction on the basics of military engagement, duties of instructors and soldiers, mounting and preparing horses, loading arms while riding, guidelines for shooting while mounted, sabre exercises, how to march with your horse, and seemingly countless other topics pertaining to Union Cavalry.

While the text of this work is important, the numerous full-page engravings at the end – views of squadron formation, dress and costume, presenting arms, bugle call music, and much more!

This particular example contains a Civil War soldier provenance of a Maj. Samuel Pollack, 99th USC Infantry.
