About This Item
London: Printed for W. Simpkin and R. Marshall, 1822. Quarter Leather. Fair. Stated fourth edition. Quarter leather with marbled boards. xxviii, 512; 542 pp. Caption below the frontis states 'published by W. Simpkin and R. Marshall June 1822.' With a frontis cameo portrait of Napoleon in volume one, plus a larger bust of Napoleon in the same volume, as well as a full length illustration of Napoleon (frontis) and an illustrated plate of the house in which Napoleon died in volume two. A detailed account of Napoleon's time in exile on St. Helena, written by O'Meara, Napoleon's physician. Notable in this account are the accusations of mistreatment of Napoleon by Sir Hudson Lowe, who was overseer of St. Helena and Napoleon. Lowe denied the charges and vowed to prosecute O'Meara, but was unable to, being too late to make any claims (Wikipedia). Based on a work published in 1819, titled 'Exposition of some of the Transactions that have taken place at St. Helena...' (See Daniell, Collectanea Napoleonica). Small bookplate of Amos Tuck French on the inside front cover. FAIR condition. Leather backstrips essentially MISSING from each volume, with some of the volume one backstrip laid in. Covers faded with moderate scuffing and edgewear. Minor soiling. Minor toning and foxing to the first and last few pages.
