About This Item
New York: Scribner, Armstrong, and Company, 1875. First Edition thus. Extensively illustrated by Gustave Doré. There are numerous full page plates and a vast number of illustrations of varying size all throughout the text. Large 8vo, in the publisher's original Riverside pebbled orange cloth, the upper cover and spine lettered and extensively illustrated with designs by Doré in black and vivid gilt, the rear cover embossed in blind, a.e.g. xii, 423 pp. A handsome copy with overall age mellowing to the cloth. Normal mellowing to the pages due to the paper stock used by the publisher, front inner hinge just starting. An honest copy of a scarce book. FIRST EDITION OF THIS RARELY SEEN ILLUSTRATED WORK BY GUSTAVE DORÉ. Saintine's sixteen chapters of myths written in the style of the Romantics gave Doré a broad canvas on which to work. The grand heroic-style plates for which he is so well know are well represented here; but these stories also gave him the opportunity to showcase his more whimsical and humorous talents. There are over 160 illustrations in this charming yet impressive tome.
