About This Item

AFRICAN HUNTING AND EXPLORATION--A BRILLIANT COPY IN DUST JACKET

HAYWOOD, Captain C. Wightwick. To The Mysterious LorianSwamp. An Adventurous & Arduous Journey of Exploration through the vast waterless tracts of unknown Jubaland. With Illustrations & a Map. 8vo, original pictorial gilt stamped yellow mustard cloth, frontispiece, pp. 275 + 15 inserted photographic plates & folding map. Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott [1927].

First American Edition; printed in Edinburgh, Scotland. Whether it be the English or American edition, most copies are less than stellar, and none that we have seen have the dust jacket. This is a brilliant copy in a excellent dust jacket, which has on its spine and front cover the same illustration of a Somali guide as on the front cover of the book. It is an account of the expedition by the former District Commission, Kenya Colony & Political Officer, Jubaland, in 1912, over the wastelands of what was then Kenya, British East Africa, now Somalia. Hostile Somalis, and terrible conditions overall, including a lack of water, were overcome. "The idea was to open up a trade route right through Jubaland, from Kismayu, past Wajheir, to the Lorian Swamp, and on to the Meru country lying at the foot of Mount Kenya."-p.18. "When I first traversed Jubaland it was unknown and unexplored…The results of my journey…eventuated in the former blank upon this part of the map of Africa being filled in, and regular trading routes being opened up."-Introduction. "While on the trail, he hunted oryx. rhinoceros, gerenuk, leopard, lion and buffalo. Near Mt. Kenya Haywood bagged a charging rhino with a .32 caliber automatic pistol after an attempt at photographing the beast.'It is not the sort of effort I care to repeat...'"-Czech, Africa, p. 123. With an index. The jacket has very minor wear, and like the book, is generally fine.
