Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 1977. 624 pp. Off-white softcover with red and black lettering on the front, back, and spine. Black leaf imagery on the front cover. Minor wear to the extremities and a slight crease to the upper-left corner of the back cover. Front endpaper is signed and dated by previous owner, otherwise no marks. Pages are clean and bright. Tight binding, square textblock. Black and white images throughout the book, with a frontispiece, "Bamboo," reproducing an ink on silk painting c. 14th century. Originally published as Volume 2 of The Tao of Painting, this is the first English translation of the famous Chinese handbook, the "Chieh Tzu Yüan Hua Chuan" (original, 1679-1701). Mai-mai Sze has translated and annotated the texts of instructions, discussions of the fundamentals of painting, notes on the preparation of colors, and chief editorial prefaces. . First Thus.
