London and New York: Macmillan And Co, 1871. The Globe Edition. Leather Bound. Full black morocco. Aeg. Fine. 509 pages. 17.5 x 12 cm. This edition, mostly in double columns bound by Caves & Wilson, Cambridge founded in 1832. Fore-edge painting of the Confederate frigate Nashville firing on the American merchant ship, the Harvey Birch. The Nashville, originally a Union war ship was captured by Confederates at Charleston and fitted out as a cruiser. Under the command of Lieutenant Robert B. Pegram, CSN, she ran the blockade on October 21, 1861, and headed across the Atlantic to Southampton, England, the first ship of war to fly the Confederate flag in English waters. In 1863 she was sunk by the monitor USS Montauck after running aground on the Ogeechee River, Georgia. She was renamed the Thomas L. Wragg by the Confederate navy. Owner inscription St. Catherine's College Cambridge dated May 1876. Toning to first few and last leaves. Bright, fresh binding, raised bands, spine panels richly gilt, gilt steering wheel design front and back covers, four gilt arabesques at the corners.
