About This Item

New York: John G. Scott, 1951. Newspaper. Twenty-two issues of the tabloid format newspaper, typically four pages each, paper toned and brittle, with minor edge tears or chips but otherwise very good. Issues present are vol. 7 nos. 2, 5-7, 12; vol. 8 nos. 1 and 3; vol. 9 no. 5, vol. 10 nos. 1, 2; vol. 11 nos. 3, 4, 6; vol. 12 nos. 6, 8-10; vol. 13 nos. 2, 3; vol. 15 nos. 7-9. John G. Scott, together with Jo Ann Wheeler, had published in the 1930's a rural anarchist periodical which they named "Mother Earth." In this publication he argues that a global banking conspiracy was operating the nations as its puppets. During the war he mocked the idea that his ideas were coming from Berlin, but some of his writing does toe the line of anti-Semitic conspiracy without actually mentioning Jews. In 1942 the postmaster general had banned the mailing of the newspaper, and the ACLU defended Scott (a cover story in the September 1942 issue mentions some of this). He ran for president on the Greenback Party ticket in 1942. In the postwar period he lambasts such initiatives as Dumbarton Oaks ("Dumb Barton Hoax").
