New York: New Directions, 1938. American writer Kay Boyle (1902-1992) was part of the prewar literary scene in Paris, where this mystery/horror novel is set. Number NC20 in the "New Classics" series, issued in a smaller format, that continued from 1939 tol 1955. This is a Very Good (minus) copy. Gray cloth binding, titled on the spine in dark blue. Clean text; 274 pages, nicely bright and clear. Small bookseller label on the FFEP. Interestingly, there is no publication date, only the copyright of 1938. Nor is the the publisher (New Directions) to be found. Although a solid copy, the spine is faded and there are ghosting floodmarks on the spine and rear cover, hence the "Minus" designation. No dustjacket.. Later Printing. Hard Cover. Very Good (Minus)/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

A departure for Boyle, she serves up a kind of a mystery story set in France wherein two Americans become in the search for a toxicologist who has been connected with certain notorious poisonings. Taxi rides, drunkenness, and a secluded estate feature.
