Penn's first book and probably his most enthusiastically collected. Roth, p. 158: "Penn reinvented the classic daytime studio portrait for a more casual time, undercutting its formality but heightening its potential as a revealing performance." Also see Frizot's New History of Photography, p. 550: "The apparent simplicity of Irving Penn's compositions conceals a formal complexity. It is the result of the particular elegance of the model's outline, of the abstract interplay of lines and shapes, of empty and filled space."Condition of this book:Fine in lightly worn, bright jacket, sunned at spine with a few marks. The slipcase is dust-darkened at the top edge, lightly soiled but sturdy. Size: Large Folio (bigger than A3). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing.
