The Folio Society, London, 1999. First Edition. Hardcover (1/4 Cloth 3/4 Photographic Boards). Very Good Condition/Slipcased. Illustrator: Photographic. Introduction by Peter Hopkirk, author's introduction, to appendices, Epilogue: The Last Player in the Great Game and index. Purple coloured end pages. The text is illustrated with the occasional map and black and white contemporary photographs, including a black-and-white frontispiece showing the author as a Russian soldier. 1/4 burgundy coloured cloth covered back strip with gilt coloured titles. 3/4 photographic boards showing various aliases of the author. Purple coloured slip case. As Peter Hopkirk has written in his introduction, this book is one of the best books on secret intelligence work ever written. The author was sent into central Asia after the Bolshevik revolution to investigate the lay of the land after the revolution and he tells of the perilous game of cat and mouse (which lasted 16 months) that he played with the dreaded Cheka  the Bolshevik secret police. Minor rubbing of the book corners and back strip edges. Some rubbing of the book edges with marks to the slip case.
