About This Item

London: Hutchinson & Co., 1922. 288pp, [40]. Original publisher's blue cloth boards, lettered black. Fore and bottom edge untrimmed. With the bookplate of Edward Frederick Benson dated 1915, designed by George Plank. Ink ownership to FFEP of C. E. Tomlin, with a later address in blue biro. Boards rubbed and marked, with the sunned spine a trifle cocked. Front inner starting, gently split at chapter 5, light foxing throughout. With Hutchinson's New Books, August 1922 catalogue bound in. The second instalment of Benson's Mapp and Lucia series, a wry send-up of Edwardian high society. E. F. Benson (1867 – 1940) was an extremely prolific English writer, completing over fifty novels, four novel series, short stories, plays, biographies, and other non-fiction works on subjects as varied as golf and grave digging. His last work, his third autobiography, was delivered to his publisher just ten days before his death. Charlie Tomlin was Benson's manservant for many years until Benson's death in 1940, likely taking this book with him after he left, accounting for the later address. . First edition. 8vo.

Terms of Sale

Antiquates Ltd

Antiquates Ltd was established by Tom Lintern-Mole in 2007; we travel far and wide to buy, sell, and advise on rare books and manuscripts.

Concentrating on hand-press printing and early modern manuscripts, we pride ourselves on offering a varied selection of antiquarian works on a diverse range of subjects, leaning towards the interesting, the important, and the unusual.

We have a countryside bookshop in Wareham; we also regularly issue catalogues - do ask if you would like to be added to our mailing list - and frequently exhibit at regional and national book fairs in London, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, and York.

We also offer a valuation service (for either insurance or probate purposes), as well as advice on library development.
