Printed for Jacob Tonson in the Strand, 1726. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" Tall (tall thin). Slight rubbing to covers (cloth over boards; chiefly to spine labels and edges); 1 leaf detached (volume 1) but present; previous owner's ink signature and inscription on 1 preliminary leaf of volume 1; slight internal browning and/or foxing (chiefly to edges). [ca. 325] pages per volume. Title on spines: Jos Addison. First issue in this format of the several verse and prose pieces (including the 'Poems on Several Occasions' (with several poems in Latin), the verse tragedy 'Cato' and the comedy 'The Drummer, or, The Haunted-House', etc). With Addison's own 4 1/2 page preface ('To the Right Honourable James Craggs, Esq'; volume 1); preface and dedicatory poem by Thomas Tickell (volume 1); tables of contents (volume 1, at rear of volume 1; volumes 2 & 3, at rear of volume 2). BMC, volume 1, page 147, column 1169 (6 other London editions and 1 Dublin edition appeared between 1735 and 1777). 2 volumes (of 3); rebound in modern half red cloth over green marbled boards, blue-green paper spine labels, printed black, plain endpapers, top edges stained dark brown, all edges trimmed.
