Phila.: Printed for Carey & Hart, 1830. 1st ed. iv,472pp. Contemporary 3/4 black morocco and marbled boards, raised spine bands, marbled endpapers, all edges marbled. Front hinge tender, else a very good or better copy. Presentation inscription from the author at head of the title page: "Presented to Mrs. Leslie as a mark of respect & Esteem By the Author." Carey's son Henry married Martha Leslie in 1819. This is a collection of some of Carey's most effective essays, including his account of the Yellow Fever epidemic in Philadelphia, his defenses of Irish Catholics and of immigrants to the United State, and his account of public societies (he was a founder of the American Philosophical Society and the Hibernian Society).
