The six novels 'recount the romantic adventures of the six marriageable daughters of a country vicar, the Reverend Charles Armitage'. In this first in the series the eldest daughter Minerva is sent to London to marry well. Doing so will restore the family fortunes so that her younger brothers can go to Eton and her father can keep his beloved hounds and horses. Fortunately she is beautiful but as she is also a prig she is easily scandalized during her her first season and makes no attempt to conceal her opinions.
