The Minds and Manners of Wild Animals: A Book of Personal Observations (association copy)

NY: Scribner's, 1922. First edition. Hardcover. Very good. Later printing, 1930. Association copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "As 'a voice crying in the wilderness'! To our Esteemed Pastor, Dr. George Stewart, with the compliments of the author, W.T Hornaday, June 26, 1931."  Uncommon signed. 

George Stewart was the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Stamford, CT, where Hornaday lived, and earlier was the associate minister of the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church in NYC. He was the author of over 20 books on history, religion, and more (not to be confused with UC Berkeley professor George R. Stewart, author of Pickett's Charge and Earth Abides, etc.), and his papers are held at the University of Oregon. He published memoirs about his service in the army during the World Wars and about his boyhood growing up in Colorado and Idaho. 

Hornaday is well-recognized as a pivotal early champion of wildlife conservation as the first director of the Bronx Zoo and president of the American Bison Society, dedicated to protecting bison in the West. This is an early work of ethology and animal psychology based on his firsthand observations and reading. 

Black and white photographic plates throughout. A very good book in green cloth with gilt lettering, a few spots on the front board and some scratching to lower rear, and some bumping to spine ends. Lacking the dustjacket. With a few penciled X's along the table of contents denoting chapters that Stewart was particularly interested in.
