Sponsored by the Ordnance Division of the War Department, it exerted a great influence on American weapon design and construction during the Civil War. Appended is "Rifled Infantry Arms: A Brief Description of The Modern System of Small Arms as Adopted by the Various European Armies by Capt. J. Washington; Dresden: George W. Bowman, Printer, 1860; 1855. Second section is a second edition. Cloth. Good +. 36th Congress, 1st Session Ex. Doc. No. 60. vii, 232 p. 30 cm. 21 large plates in part one (including a tint-stone folding view) and and 13 smaller folding plates in part two. Brown cloth hardcover with blank impressing. Respined with original spine attached. Gilding worn off spine. Repaired corners. Some foxing to plates and endpapers. Previous owner's signature whited out on first title page. Small chip on upper right corner of large folding plate. Damp stain on lower part of front endpapers. An important American military study of the armies of the major powers in Europe, including Russia, Prussia, Austria, France, and Britain. The work covers all aspects of the military organizations of these countries, presumably with the intention of learning ways to improve the forces at home. This study would soon be needed, since, at time of publication, America was on the verge of civil war. Sabin 50532.
