About This Item
U.S.A: Ballantine Books, 1996. First Thus. Paperback. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7?" - 9?" tall. Rini Templeton. First Ballantine Trade Paperback Book in Very Good Condition. Illustrations by Rini Termpleton. A novel of the New Mexico Triology, which also includes "The Magic Journey" and "The Nirvana Blues". Very gently used book, clean and unmarked cover, whisper of wear to corners, no creases. Glued binding tight, solid and square. Internals with blacked out inch on corner of first page, pages clean, no markings or creases. A feisty hustler, Joe Mondragon, had a talent for trouble. Driving along, he slammed his battered pickup to a stop, pulled on his gum boots. and marched into the arid patch of ground nearby. Carefully, impulsively, and also illegally, he tapped into the main irrigation channel--and so began the Milagro Beanfield War--although no one knew that right away. In this dirt -pooor town of Milagro. it took awhile for the farmers and sheepherders to rally round Joe as his beanfield--in that arid plot of land- became a symbol to them of lost rights and lost lands. And they go to battle, in fits and starts, with the Anglo water barons and power brokers in the capital who are desperate to destroy this symbol before it destroys their multi-millionaire-dollar land development schemes. A delightful, ridiculous, comic portrayal of a town stumbling along its way toward its own stubborn salvation. A story told with insight, compassion, wit and humor. 456 pages. 5.5 x 8.25 inches. 1996, Ballantine Books, USA
