About This Item

Crawfordsville, IN: R. E. Banta, 1945. First, Limited Edition. Hardcover. fine. Narrow quarto, 339 pages, clothbacked boards, untrimmed fore-edge, inked name, original glue stains at hinges

One of 500 copies. A study of social history in the early Middle West or Midwest. " The pioneer wife was alone with her children. The Indians around the cabin, though bent on grabbing hot bread rather than scalps, were getting out of hand. When one8 started to crawl through the cabin window, she cracked him on the skull with the wooden potato masher, pulled him on in, and barred the shutter. A while later a somewhat more sober Indian was pushed out the cabin door to find his companions. The wound and contusion on his head had been bathed in cold cider vinegar and neatly bound in a poultice of squirrel brains and crushed ginseng leaves. So well did the job meet with the Indians' approval that thereafter, when they more politely asked for the hot bread which was, next to liquor, their greatest weakness, there was much thumping of skulls and grunting laughter." - p.7.

About Thomas J. Joyce And Company

Joyce And Company has been in business as a professional rare bookseller and appraiser since 1975. Owner Thomas Joyce was the regular book appraiser on Home & Garden TV\'s \"The Appraisal Fair\\\" program, on international broadcasts. Thomas Joyce was the co-discoverer of George Washington's personal copy of William Leybourn's 1679 edition of THE COMPLEAT SURVEYOR, from which young Washington learned some of his surveying skills at age 16. The book had vanished for nearly a century until its re-discovery in 2017. It is now back at Mt. Vernon.
