Octavo (21cm); beige cloth, with titling and decorative elements stamped in green and dark brown; dustjacket; [12],13-349,[3]pp. Inscribed by the author on the front endpaper: "Riverton, KY / March 5th, 1942 / To hank and Kitty Weaver with best wishes from John and Harriet Weaver and with kind regards from the author / Jesse Stuart." Light wear, faint foxing to cloth, text edges, and endpapers, bump to upper right corner of front board, with some dust-soil to upper edge of textblock; Very Good+. Dustjacket is unclipped (priced $2.50), edgeworn, spine-sunned, with several chips, tears, and attendant creases, one neatly mended tear to upper front joint, and some scattered foxing and staining on verso; just Very Good. Short stories of backwoods Kentucky. "Most of the stories bring out the pathos and frequent grotesqueness of modern backwoods existence" (BOGER 451). HANNA 3413.
