Very clean gray cloth boards with red,black and gold decoration and lettering on cover and spines. Smattering of faint brown speckles to spine of Volume I. Tiny closed tear(1/16") to upper spine edge of Volume II. Bindings are tight and square, hinges are sound - no cracking. Clean endpapers - no names, writing or marks. Gilt top page edges. Photogravure frontispiece portrait of Edward Everett Hale in Vol. I with clean printed tissue guard; Preface by the author; 318 pages. Pages are clean and bright in both volumes, with black and white illustrations throughout. Volume II has a frontispiece drawing - a portrait of Hale by Alfred Houghton Clark, with clean printed tissue guard, additional illustrations. 320 pages with index. Life as it was in the 19th century in Boston and environs..
